Singapore Airlines baggage allowance offers generous options to ensure you carry all the travel essentials on the trip. All travel classes include some sort of free allowance, which, in a way, contributes to your budget. Pack your luggage according to the weight and size limits of the standard bag. In addition to this, you have to comply with other restrictions as well on certain items. Any piece of baggage exceeding the limitations is subject to an excess fee, which can be heavy on your budget. Singapore Airlines Checked Baggage Restrictions
Checked baggage allowance with Singapore Airlines is based on the weight and piece concept, depending on the selected destination. Your free allowance is clearly mentioned in the ticket confirmation email. The airlines refer to the piece concept only for flights to/from Canada and the United States.
Under the piece concept, the permitted weight varies from 23kg to 32kg based on the travel class. You can bring a limited number of bags under the specified weight limit. Singapore Airlines Baggage Policy For Non-Standard Items
Do you want to travel with your heavy sports equipment and musical instruments but are concerned they may not fit the standard? Worry not! There may be items that do not meet the standard limits of the Singapore Airlines Baggage Policy. They should measure under 200cm (length) x 75cm (width) x 80cm (height). You can still submit such baggage at the check-in counter or carry it on board. Upon arrival, you may collect it from the different carousel if you check it in. However, if the size is exceeded, please seek assistance from the airline.
1. Sports Equipment
Sports equipment is treated as checked baggage under Singapore Airlines Baggage Allowance. If the items are bigger than the mentioned dimensions, the airline will charge an additional fee. The regulations vary depending on the selected route. If you are flying to or from Canada and the USA, almost every sports equipment is considered one piece. However, a canoe is considered to be two pieces. For flights to or from Canada, the airline charges sports equipment as the baggage allowance for the trip.
Do remember that the airline will not check in bags over 32kgs. If it is, repack the items, or the airline will ship them through the cargo department. You can bring any of the following items as sports equipment. These items are bound by certain restrictions; do contact the airline before packing them for the trip.
- Archery
- Avalanche Rescue Backpack

2. Musical Instruments
Ensure that musical instruments are packed in a suitable and rigid case to protect them from possible damage. Depending on the shape and size of the equipment, the airline decides whether to check it in or permit it onboard. You may also book an extra seat for your instrument if it is within the standard size and weight limit.
As Cabin Baggage
If you are bringing small instruments like violin, flute, ukelele, etc., you can carry them onboard without any hassle. This will be counted towards your cabin baggage allowance. For this purpose, the sum of all sides of the baggage should not be over 115 cm and weigh no more than 7kg.
As Checked Baggage
Check-in items that are bigger in size, such as cello, full-sized guitars, or any instrument that exceeds the cabin SIA baggage limit. Afterwards, the airline counts it towards your permitted allowance. In case you exceed the limit, additional charges for excess baggage will apply.
Cabin-seat Baggage
If you do not wish to check in the item, you can also purchase an additional seat for your precious instrument. In this case, the weight and size limit changes for the baggage. Make sure you meet the following conditions to carry your equipment as cabin-seat baggage:
- Boeing 737 aircraft – 44cm (height) X 30cm (width) x 30cm (depth)
- Non-Boeing 737 aircraft – 127cm (height) X 45cm (width) x 30cm (depth)
