China Southern Airlines Baggage Allowance Rules 2024

Published on December 18, 2023

China Southern Airlines Baggage Allowance lets passengers carry bags for free depending on the purchased travel class. Both carry-on and checked bags have certain mandatory restrictions. These may vary according to selected routes and the status of passengers. Premium fare classes are more likely to offer generous baggage options. However, any bag over the permitted weight and size dimensions is not accepted by the airline, irrespective of the higher passenger’s status. Therefore, ensure check-in bags that are up to to China Southern Airlines Baggage Rules. Scroll through to learn more information, and get ready to pack for your next trip!

General Guidelines for Carrying Bags on China Southern Flights

Baggage allowance for China Southern passengers is classified as checked and un-checked bags. The categorization is done on the basis of the transportation requirements of a bag. Baggage refers to unchecked or carry-on items if permitted and considered safe inside the flight cabin. If the bag is handed over to the airline for transportation, it is called checked baggage. As per the CZ baggage allowance, passengers are responsible for carrying unchecked bags.

Additionally, every bag must meet the baggage restrictions described under the policy for a safe and hassle-free journey. The airline may charge extra charges for bags that are not up to the weight and size limits. This can add up to your overall travel expense, and no one wants to pay extra. Thus, carefully go through the following China Southern Airlines Baggage Rules to avoid additional charges.

China Southern Carry-on/Unchecked Baggage Rules

Carry-on Bag Size on China Southern

China Southern Airlines Baggage Allowance states that unchecked bags must be checked before check-in and boarding. The size of the carry-on should be under 55 x 40 x 20 cm or 22 x 16 x 8 inches. It should not weigh more than 8kg. There are designated areas or spaces for carry-ons; you cannot put your bag anywhere inside the flight cabin. Passengers are responsible for placing their hand luggage carefully in the overhead compartment bin or underneath the front seat. Ensure the bags must not hinder the movement of other passengers. If you have booked an emergency exit row seat, put your bag in the overhead bin only. The airline has the right to decline transportation of any bag that can pose a risk to the passenger’s health. Thus, the staff can decide whether to consider the bag as a carry-on or checked bag.

Check size and weight constraints applied to luggage allowed in China Southern Airlines. The table below will help you understand baggage restrictions according to the nature of flights and cabin classes.

China Southern Excess Baggage Allowance

Excess Baggage guide on China Southern flights

Passengers are responsible for bringing in bags at the check-in counter or self-service check-in kiosk according to their allowance. Your bags go through a series of inspections at the check-in counter, security check counter, boarding gate, and finally, inside the cabin. Any bag exceeding the fee allowance is treated as excess baggage, and accordingly, the rates will apply.

  1. Excess Baggage for Domestic Routes

China Southern Airlines will charge an extra fee for bags that exceed the size and weight restrictions. The amount is charged according to each kilogram at a rate of 1.5% of the standard fare. Below we have tabulated the excess baggage fee for domestic flights:

Flights departing from Guangzhou, Beijing Daxing, Shenzhen, Changchun, Shenyang, Wuhan, Zhengzhou, Urumqi, Nanning, Harbin, Shanghai Pudong, Shanghai Hongqiao, Changsha, Guiyang, and Jieyang

  1. Excess Baggage Fee for International Route

If a bag is not as per the China Southern Airlines Baggage Rules and exceeds the weight and size dimensions, it is treated as excess baggage. If the baggage is both oversized and overweight, the airline will charge the fee accumulatively. The selection of currency in which the fee is charged is decided as follows:

  • If the flight origin is within the country (except for Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan), the airline will charge a fee in CNY.
  • If the origin is within Europe, the fee is charged on a Euro basis.
  • The fee is charged on a U.S. dollar basis for flights originating in countries other than the above-stated countries.

Regulations for Traveling with Service Animal

Regulations for Traveling with Service Animal

China Southern Airlines baggage allowance for international flight permits passengers to check in small animals. This depends on the rules and regulations of the departing and destination country. Your pet should be carried in a single cage. The airline does not allow the transportation of small animals on domestic flights. Pregnant animals or any animal that is not suitable for air transport are not accepted by airlines.  This is to remind you that China Southern Airlines will not count the animal into your free baggage allowance, and charges will apply according to applicable charges.

Use a carriage that is suitable for your pet and has enough space as well. The size of the carriage should not be over 90 x 60 x 66 cm or under 5 x 15 x 20 cm. In addition, it should weigh under 32kg. Make sure the pet is in good health, clean, harmless, and does not have a weird smell. Passengers traveling with small animals have to submit an application to the airline at the time of reservation or at least a day before the scheduled departure (2 days before international flight departure). Reach the check-in counter with your animal 120 minutes before the scheduled takeoff.
