Regarding the KLM carry on size and weight allowance, passengers can carry the hand baggage with maximum dimensions of 55 x 25 x 35 cm (21.5 x 10 x 13.5 in) and must not exceed 26 lbs (12 kg).

Passengers traveling in Business class can carry two bags and 1 Personal Item such as a laptop bag, ladies purse, briefcase, etc. KLM carry on luggage size for small baggage/personal item must be under 45 x 20 x 35 cm (18 x 8 x 13.5 in).

Also, the baggage weight must not exceed the overall weight of 40 lbs (18 kg). These are the KLM carry on measurements that will be applicable at any cost to avoid the loss of excess baggage.

Note: Passengers must ensure that bulkhead seats don’t have a storage limit under the seat during landing and take-off of the flight.

KLM Hand Baggage for Kids/Infants

Travelers traveling with their child will have a baggage allowance like an adult ticket. Passengers traveling with lap infants or small babies have additional benefits on luggage. If the infant has no extra/personal seat and travels on your lap, you can bring one additional item. The size dimensions must not exceed 55 x 35 x 25 cm and must be under 26 lbs (12 kg) of weight. According to KLM checked baggage weight policy, Economy Class passengers can carry 1 checked bag under the restricted weight of 50.5 lbs (23 kg) and must not exceed 158 cm (62 in). Similarly, Business Class passengers will be eligible to carry 2 pieces of bags that must be under 70.5 lbs (32 kg) and size dimensions of 158 cm (62 in) each. Passengers carrying Flying Blue, Silver, Gold, and Platinum members, Skyteam Elite and Elite Plus members can bring 1 extra luggage depending on the cabin class selected. KLM Checked Baggage Grant for Kids

Passengers traveling with their kids may have additional baggage allowance benefits depending on the ticket type. If you have already booked a complete seat for your child, you can bring several bags if included in the fare. Passengers traveling with the lap infants, those tickets include a checked bag, can bring one additional item for their child. The maximum overall weight must not exceed 10 kg.

Note: The airline will refuse all irregularly packed baggage because this may cause damage to the baggage handling system. 

KLM Overweight Checked Baggage Fees

If you are sure you are carrying oversized/overweight baggage, you purchase the allowance by paying an additional amount to avoid further loss. You can buy an additional allowance for checked luggage of up to 23 kg per item. Passengers can easily do this through the My Trip section on the official website. 

If you purchase the additional checked baggage allowance at least 24 hours before departure, KLM checked baggage fees between EUR 20 and EUR 70 will be payable on the flight within Europe for additional baggage. Also, between EUR 30 and EUR 240 will be paid on intercontinental flights.

KLM Excess Baggage Fees

KLM Special Baggage Allowance

KLM Airlines carries and transports normal bags and unusual and special bags. Passengers can carry Bicycles, Sports Equipment, Musical Instruments, Extra Items for Kids, Wedding Dresses, Weapons for Shooting, etc. 

Baggage Allowance for Sports Equipment

If you want to carry your sports equipment, it is possible with KLM Airlines. The airline allows passengers to carry checked baggage as hold-on luggage. For Economy Class, Sports Equipment must not exceed the linear dimension of 300 cm (118 in) in length, and weight must be under 50.5 lbs (23 kg). Also, the Business Class passengers can carry the equipment as checked luggage with a maximum weight of 32 kg.

Bicycle

KLM Airlines allows passengers to carry their Bicycle or Tandem after paying an additional fee. The airline calculates the fees based on the travel itinerary and route selected. Also, passengers must reserve the space for transport at least 48 hours before the flight departure. Passengers can reserve the slot from the “My Trip” section, which also includes all the requirements by the airline and exact transportation fees. 

Check the below points to know how to pack the Bicycle for KLM transportation: 

• The passenger must pack bike in a box used for bike transportation.
• If you are at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, you can purchase the bike box from the odd-size baggage desk of KLM Airlines.
• The size dimensions of the box will be 176.5 x 23 x 101.5 cm, and the overall weight of the box measures 4.5 kg.
• The overall size of the bike, including packaging, must not exceed a maximum weight of 23 kg and overall maximum size dimensions of 300 cm.
• Make sure to remove all the pin-pointed objects, tires, pedals, handles, etc., before packing to avoid any type of damage.
• Passengers can only carry an Electric Bicycle after removing the batteries. 
• Also, the airline doesn’t transport batteries with more than 160 Wh capacity. 

Golf Equipment

Light-fare passengers are not allowed to carry any checked luggage, and you must pay for Golf equipment. But, if you booked a Standard or Flex ticket in any cabin class, you can carry Golf equipment instead of checked items without paying additional fees. Your Golf set consists of clubs, balls, and only one pair of Golf Shoes. 

To avoid paying extra, ensure the equipment follows all the size and weight restrictions. The size must be under 300 cm maximum linear dimension and weigh not more than 23 kg for Economy and Premium Comfort Class. The weight increases to 32 kg for Business class passengers. 

Flying Blue Members: If you are a Flying Blue Silver, Gold, or Platinum member, you can have one additional Golf bag and your Standard checked baggage allowance. The maximum weight must not exceed 23 kg and only contain Golf Equipment.

Skis, Snowboard, and Diving Equipment

KLM baggage allowance allow passengers to carry water sports equipment such as Skis, Snowboards, and Diving. Skis and Snowboards will be carried as checked luggage without paying any reservation fees. Diving equipment needs a reservation for transport. The size and weight restrictions are the same as the checked baggage allowance. 

• Set of Skis: It can only contain a pair of skis, ski poles, and ski boots. 
• Snowboard Set: Snowboard set only consists of a pair of snowboarding boots and a snowboard. 
• Diving Equipment Set: You can carry a diving equipment set containing a wetsuit, vest, socks, mask, shoes, flippers, knife, regulators, and air cylinders. 

Dive Lamps: Dive lamps can be carried as hand baggage, and the bulb and batteries must be removed while transporting. 

Note: Scuba tanks or air cylinders must be empty, and the valve must be removed. 

Surfing Equipment

Passengers can carry their surfing equipment, whether Watersurfing, Windsurfing, or Kitesurfing. Travelers can bring these items as their checked luggage. Also, the reservation is a must-have surfing equipment. The bag must be under 107 cm. 

• Surfing Equipment: Passengers can carry a wave, boogie, or body surfboard, and it must be packed perfectly in a surfboard bag.
• Windsurfing Equipment: All the Windsurfing stuff, such as a Board, Mast, Sail, and Boom, must be packed in a quiver bag.
• Kitesurfing Equipment: Passengers must ensure that all the Kitesurfing equipment, such as a Board and a Kite, is appropriately packed in a Kite bag.

Note: Extra fees may apply on flights to/from Canada, Mexico, and the United States.

Fishing Equipment

There is no need to make a reservation for Fishing Equipment. Instead of carrying Checked luggage, you can bring your fishing equipment. Fishing Equipment only consists of rods, a reel, a landing net, a fishing tackle box, and a pair of fishing boots. All the items must be packed in a single package.

Weapons for Shooting/Hunting Sports

All the unloaded firearms, ammunition, and hunting equipment must only be packed inside the checked baggage. Passenger needs to reserve the space for transportation in advance. Passengers can carry up to 5 kg of Hunting Ammunition, a shooting mat, small tools, and a hearing protector along with the weapon or weapon case they are carrying. When carrying a Rifle, the firearm and ammunition must be packed separately.

Required Documentation for Weapons and Hunting Equipment

Carry all the required/mandatory documents while transporting firearms, weapons, and ammunition. Here is a list of documents that must be available:

• Weapon License
• Signed declaration form
• Import and Export license of the weapon/ammunition for the countries of departure, transfer, and arrival
• While traveling to/from/via the Netherlands, a Dutch Tax and Customs Administration license must be available.

Note: It usually takes almost 8 weeks to collect all the declaration forms, licenses, and documents. If all the documents, licenses, and declaration forms are unavailable at the airport while boarding/check-in, the airport authority will seize the weapons and ammunition. 

KLM Special Baggage for Kids

Most of the time, you must pack the bags with special items for your kids. You can carry these items by following all the airlines’ restrictions: 

• Buggies/Stroller/Back Carriers: While flying with KLM, you can carry a buggy, stroller, or back carrier without additional cost. Passengers can bring a collapsible umbrella stroller inside the cabin with a maximum size of 15 x 30 x 100 cm that fits under the seat or in the overhead bin. Larger buggy/strollers will be checked in.
• Car Seats: You can carry a car seat if you booked a seat for the infant/child. The airline has a limited seating option; you must make the reservation at least 48 hours before the flight departure. 
• Inflight Beds and Leg-rest Extensions: If the seat is booked, an Inflight bed or leg-rest is allowed on the flight without making any reservation. Also, the head of the child must be facing towards the aircraft’s tail. 

KLM Baggage Guide for Musical Instruments

Passengers can carry musical instruments as carry-on or checked luggage. KLM carry on size for these instruments must be, at most, the restricted limit. The airline decides to transport the instruments as hand baggage, checked baggage, or an extra seat, depending on the weight and size of the instrument.

As Hand Luggage: Passengers can carry their musical instruments as hand luggage if they have a maximum of 55 x 35 x 25 cm dimensions and weigh not more than 12 kg in Economy and Premium Comfort class and 18 kg in Business class. 

On Extra Seat: If the musical instrument weighs more than the carry-on luggage and up to 45 kg, the airline prefers to bring it on an extra seat. The maximum height of the instrument must not exceed 140 cm. 

As Checked Luggage: If your Musical Instrument measures under the checked bag restricted weight and size limit, the airline will consider it as checked luggage, and there is no need to make any reservation. If it exceeds the weight and size limit, passengers must make a reservation at least 48 hours before the flight departure. Also, the excess fees for oversized and overweight baggage will be applicable.

Other Special Baggage

Passengers traveling with special items such as wedding dresses, urns, or human remains can carry in KLM Airlines. Travelers can carry the wedding dress inside the cabin as hand luggage if there is enough space. Passengers must ensure it is appropriately packed in a clothing bag and meet all the restrictions. If not, then it will be checked in at the gate.

To transport human remains, the passenger needs to talk with the funeral director so that they can make the required arrangements to avoid any hassle while transporting. 

Restricted Items

If you are flying with KLM Airlines, you must know about all the restricted items to avoid hassle while checking. The airline follows strict guidelines for restricted items carried as handbags or checked luggage. Here is a list of prohibited items: 

• Firearms and Ammunitions
• Edged and Sharp Objects
• Explosives
• Flammable Substances
• Toxic Chemical and Substances
• Weapons

Restrictions on Liquids: Passengers can carry liquids such as shampoo, conditioners, etc., in small containers not larger than 100 ml per item. The total volume of all containers must be at most 1 liter and will be packed in 1 transparent plastic bag. Sealed tax-free items, specific diet food, medicine, and baby food are always allowed.

Lithium and Electronic Batteries: Travelers can carry up to 15 lithium battery devices. The batteries must be under 100 Wh. Also, 20 spare lithium batteries or power banks are allowed to carry up to 100 Wh. 

Electronic Cigarettes: Like most airlines, KLM also provides a facility to carry Electronic Cigarettes on most routes. E-cigarettes cannot be placed inside hand luggage and can be kept with you only. These rules depend on country to country. You cannot carry E-cigarettes as checked baggage as well.

Powdered Substances: Powderlike substances up to 350 ml per item are allowed in your hand baggage. If you plan to carry more than that, you can pack it as your checked luggage.
